Galway is gearing up for one of the most celebrated events on the calendar tonight: the annual Macnas Parade.
Around 250 performers will take over the city, marking the mid-point of the 14-day Galway Arts Festival.
About 80,000 spectators are expected to line the streets for the spectacular street display, which gets underway at 8.45pm at the Spanish Arch.
Paul Fahy, Artistic Director of Galways Arts Festival, says the Macnas Parade always captures the imagination: "It's a real visual spectacle and is unlike anything else you will see on the streets in Ireland throughout the year.
"There are giant moving marionettes, sculputrual puppets, interactive moving sculptures, tons of fire and scores of music that punctuates each different section of the parade.
"It's one of the most amazing days on the cultural calendar in Ireland."
