Kate Upton covers the Italian issue of GQ - GQ Italia if you will - and the photo shoot has us wondering how to say "very hot woman "in Italian.

We looked it up on Google. Hopefully the above headline is right.

Either way, she's hot, despite wearing more clothing than she has in a long time. At least in magazines. Check out Kate on the cover ...

Other things we need translated? "The skinny blogger who criticized her weight is an idiot." Well, we don't actually need that translated. But it is true and bears repeating.

In her last few spreads, Kate's gone away from the Terry Richardson method - showing as much skin as possible - and proven she looks great in clothes as well.

India suffers new, even bigger power failure

India's northern electricity grid which covers an area home to more than 300 million people failed for the second day in a row on Tuesday, with the eastern network also down, an official said.

"We are busy with the revival right now... Both the Northern and Eastern grids have collapsed. Please allow us to address the problem," V.K.Agrawal, the general manager of the northern grid, told AFP.

In New Delhi, the metro came to a standstill and traffic lights were out.

"Drivers of all the metro trains have been asked to stop at the stations. No passengers will be allowed in the metro station until power is restored," a metro spokeswoman told AFP.

The eastern city of Kolkata was without power as were most parts of West Bengal, an official at the West Bengal State Electricity Supply Corp., B. Mukherjee, confirmed to AFP.

Mayor Bloomberg pushing NYC hospitals to hide baby formula so more new moms will breast-feed

Browse > Home / Sci-Tech / Mayor Bloomberg pushing NYC hospitals to hide baby formula so more new moms will breast-feed

Mayor Bloomberg is pushing hospitals to hide their baby formula behind locked doors so more new mothers will breast-feed.

Starting Sept. 3, the city will keep tabs on the number of bottles that participating hospitals stock and use ? the most restrictive pro-breast-milk program in the nation.

Under the city Health Department?s voluntary Latch On NYC initiative, 27 of the city?s 40 hospitals have also agreed to give up swag bags sporting formula-company logos, toss out formula-branded tchotchkes like lanyards and mugs, and document a medical reason for every bottle that a newborn receives.

While breast-feeding activists applaud the move, bottle-feeding moms are bristling at the latest lactation lecture.

?If they put pressure on me, I would get annoyed,? said Lynn Sidnam, a Staten Island mother of two formula-fed girls, ages 4 months and 9 years. ?It?s for me to choose.?

Under Latch On NYC, new mothers who want formula won?t be denied it, but hospitals will keep infant formula in out-of-the-way secure storerooms or in locked boxes like those used to dispense and track medications.

With each bottle a mother requests and receives, she?ll also get a talking-to. Staffers will explain why she should offer the breast instead.

?It?s the patient?s choice,? said Allison Walsh, of Beth Israel Medical Center. ?But it?s our job to educate them on the best option.?

Archeologists unearth extraordinary human sculpture in Turkey

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? A beautiful and colossal human sculpture is one of the latest cultural treasures unearthed by an international team at the Tayinat Archaeological Project (TAP) excavation site in southeastern Turkey. A large semi-circular column base, ornately decorated on one side, was also discovered. Both pieces are from a monumental gate complex that provided access to the upper citadel of Kunulua, capital of the Neo-Hittite Kingdom of Patina (ca. 1000-738 BC).

"These newly discovered Tayinat sculptures are the product of a vibrant local Neo-Hittite sculptural tradition," said Professor Tim Harrison, the Tayinat Project director and professor of Near Eastern Archaeology in the University of Toronto's Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations. "They provide a vivid glimpse into the innovative character and sophistication of the Iron Age cultures that emerged in the eastern Mediterranean following the collapse of the great imperial powers of the Bronze Age at the end of the second millennium BC."

The head and torso of the human figure, intact to just above its waist, stands approximately 1.5 metres in height, suggesting a total body length of 3.5 to four metres. The figure's face is bearded, with beautifully preserved inlaid eyes made of white and black stone, and its hair has been coiffed in an elaborate series of curls aligned in linear rows. Both arms are extended forward from the elbow, each with two arm bracelets decorated with lion heads. The figure's right hand holds a spear, and in its left is a shaft of wheat. A crescent-shaped pectoral adorns its chest. A lengthy Hieroglyphic Luwian inscription, carved in raised relief across its back, records the campaigns and accomplishments of Suppiluliuma, likely the same Patinean king who faced a Neo-Assyrian onslaught of Shalmaneser III as part of a Syrian-Hittite coalition in 858 BC.

The second sculpture is a large semi-circular column base, approximately one metre in height and 90 centimetres in diameter, lying on its side next to the human figure. A winged bull is carved on the front of the column and it is flanked by a sphinx on its left. The right side of the column is flat and undecorated, an indication that it originally stood against a wall.

"The two pieces appear to have been ritually buried in the paved stone surface of the central passageway through the Tayinat gate complex," said Harrison. The complex would have provided a monumental ceremonial approach to the upper citadel of the royal city. Tayinat, a large low-lying mound, is located 35 kilometres east of Antakya (ancient Antioch) along the Antakya-Aleppo road.

The presence of colossal human statues, often astride lions or sphinxes, in the citadel gateways of the Neo-Hittite royal cities of Iron Age Syro-Anatolia continued a Bronze Age Hittite tradition that accentuated their symbolic role as boundary zones, and the role of the king as the divinely appointed guardian or gate keeper of the community. By the ninth and eighth centuries BC, these elaborately decorated gateways, with their ornately carved reliefs, had come to serve as dynastic parades, legitimizing the power of the ruling elite. The gate reliefs also formed linear narratives, guiding their audiences between the human and divine realms, with the king serving as the link between the two worlds.

The Tayinat gate complex appears to have been destroyed following the Assyrian conquest of the region in 738 BC, when the area was paved over and converted into the central courtyard of an Assyrian sacred precinct. These smashed and deposited monumental sculptures also include a magnificently carved lion that was discovered last year and Hieroglyphic Luwian-inscribed stelae (stone slabs or pillars used for commemoratives purposes). Together these finds hint of an earlier Neo-Hittite complex that might have once faced the gateway approach.

Scholars have long speculated that the reference to Calno, identified as one of the "kingdoms of the idols" in Isaiah's oracle against Assyria (Isaiah 10:9-10), alludes to the Assyrian devastation of Kunulua (i.e., Tayinat). The destruction of the Luwian monuments and conversion of the area into an Assyrian religious complex may represent the physical manifestation of this historic event, subsequently memorialized in Isaiah's oracle, experts say.

2 US climbers found dead on Peruvian peak

Peru Police via AP

A Peru police photo shows a yellow tent believed by authorities to belong to U.S. climbers Gil Weiss and Ben Horne near Palcaraju Peak in Huaraz, Peru.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Searchers on Saturday found the bodies of two U.S. mountaineers who apparently plunged 1,000 feet to their deaths on their way down from the summit of a glacier-capped Peruvian peak.

Gil Weiss, 29, and Ben Horne, 32, fell off a ridge after reaching the west summit of 20,584-foot?Palcaraju in the Cordillera Blanca range in mid-July, search coordinator Ted Alexander told The Associated Press.

Their bodies will be recovered Sunday, he said.

Both Weiss, of Queens, N.Y., and Horne, of Annandale, Va., were experienced climbers. Weiss was a repeat visitor to the Cordillera Blanca while this trip was Horne's first.

Both belong to the pullharder.org climbers' collective, and Horne wrote about the first, six-day leg of their trip on its blog, saying they had been buffeted by hurricane-force winds when the two reached the top of the 20,216-foot Ranrapalca.

After a rest in Huaraz, the two set out again July 11 for an excursion of seven to 10 days. Their families contacted Alexander after 13 days passed with no word from them.

Weiss's sister, Galit, said the two were not carrying a satellite phone.

Horne was a graduate student in economics at the University of California, San Diego. Weiss was founder of a business a Boulder, Colo., business called Beyond Adventure Productions that specialized in organizing and photographing events in remote and spectacular locations.

The Cordillera Blanca climbing season runs from June to September, and the deaths of Weiss and Horne bring to eight the number of mountaineers who have lost their lives in the range so far this year, the AP said.

Life in the Slow Lane: Potato Salad and Ernest Hemingway

My reading one year whilst on holiday was 'Islands in the Stream' - by Ernest Hemingway.? I really can't remember anything about the storyline - I just remember I enjoyed reading it at the time?and the thing that stuck out most for me in the book?was Hemingways' descriptions of food.? In particular Potato Salad - and now, whenever I make it - it takes me right back to that book and that holiday. "I'll pass you up the rifle and get the hell back to those potatoes.? The boys like potato salad, don't they?? The way we fix it?"
"Sure.? Roger too.? Put in plenty of hard-boiled egg and onion."
"I'll keep the potatoes good and firm.? Here's the rifle."? (Islands in the Stream)

Hemingway used to say that he preferred writing when he was hungry because it was good discipline.? Whatever it was, I expect that it made his descriptions of food and drink more potent.

Certainly these are scattered throughout 'Islands in the Stream' and if you can read a book without craving a fresh onion sandwich or a cold gin-and-tonic, then you probably have a healthy immunity to your appetite.

There is something about salty sea air, warm sun and bracing surf that somehow makes lunch seem incomplete without potato salad.? Part of Hemingways' genius was in making such connections for those who read his stories.
There are many different ways of preparing Potato Salad - but the one that suits my taste which has been perfected over the years is - the simpler the better.? Potatoes, Spring Onions, Hard Boiled Eggs and chopped Chives mixed together with Mayo?and a little Salad Cream and sprinkled with Paprika.

The French add olive oil, mustard and shallots with thyme - the Spanish add vegetables, olive and sherry vinegar.

The secret is to chill it for a couple of hours before eating to let all the flavours meld together.

"Boys seem to be doing all right" Eddy said.? "We've got fish for dinner already."
"Sounds fine.? How's that potato salad?"
"It isn't cold yet Tom."
"Eddy you like to cook don't you."
"Damn right I like to cook.? I like going in a boat and I like to cook.? What I don't like is rows and fights and trouble." (Islands in the Stream)

So there you have it - whenever I make potato salad I think of Ernest Hemingway - funny how the mind works isn't it?

(The first part of the book takes place in Bimini in the Bahamas - take a look at the video and see how fabulous it is)

Pope saddened by Ghana's loss

Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday sent a message of condolence to Ghana, following the sudden death this week of president John Atta Mills, and paid homage to a politician widely lauded for his integrity.

"It was with sadness that I learned of the untimely death of president John Atta Mills," the pope said in a message to the new president, John Dramani Mahama, who was sworn in on Tuesday following the 68-year-old's death.

"Recalling his years of public service and his dedication to democratic principles, I join you, his family, and all the people of Ghana in mourning his passing," he said in the letter, sent from his holiday home, Castel Gandolfo.

"Entrusting the late president's soul to the providence of almighty God, I pray that Ghana will be blessed with peace and prosperity as you begin your service as president in these sad circumstances," he added.

Mills' death came five months ahead of elections in the country seen as a bastion of democracy in west Africa.

The cause of death was not given, but there were unconfirmed reports in local media that he had suffered from throat cancer.

Ryan Lochte vs. Michael Phelps: Why Rivalries Make Us Better

The celebrated rivalry between American swimmers Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps will come to a head Saturday, when the 27-year-old U.S. teammates compete for Olympic gold in the 400-meter individual medley. Lochte beat Phelps by just 83-hundredths of second in the four-minute race at trials last month, and anything could happen at what's been dubbed the "duel in the pool" in London.

For years Lochte splashed around in the wake of Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals at the 2008 Olympics, but their rivalry has intensified as their finish times have converged. Lochte says this summer is his turn to shine, while Phelps wants one last hurrah. New research on rivalry suggests they're both the better athletes for their epic battle to be best.

"A rivalry in this kind of context is apt to benefit these swimmers' motivation and performance," said Gavin Kilduff, an assistant professor at New York University who studies the causes and consequences of rivalry. In fact, the swimmers could be boosting each other's performances by as much as 2 percent.

Intense rivalries develop for three main reasons, according to past research by Kilduff and colleagues. First, competitors turn into rivals when they feel similar to one another, both in terms of characteristics and abilities. Second, a rivalry builds the more times two competitors face off. It further strengthens when past contests have been closely decided.

"That could be in part because if you win or lose by a very small margin, you imagine that the opposite could have happened; that can be a very emotionally arousing situation that lives on in your mind," Kilduff told Life's Little Mysteries.

Hitting all the marks, the rivalry between Lochte and Phelps seems inevitable. Now, new, unpublished research by Kilduff and colleagues suggests it could be shaving as much as 2 percent off the swimmers' times. Looking at the performance of 82 amateur runners of 5-kilometer races over the course of six years, the researchers found that the runners ran, on average, 25 seconds faster when they competed against a runner who fit the profile of being their rival (based on the characteristics of rivals described above). Assuming experienced runners finish 5K races in 20 minutes, that's a 2-percent speed increase.

Although one cannot always reliably extrapolate that number to other sports or situations, Kilduff said the message is clear: "Rivalries produce a significant performance boost." [The 7 Biggest Mysteries of the Human Body]

That holds true for everyone, not just elite athletes. In another finding to be published as part of the same study, Kilduff found that having a rival in school, the workplace, on a sports team, or in a romantic relationship motivates and energizes us. In one experiment, he asked one group of people to write a detailed essay about a personal rival of theirs, and another group to write an essay about a non-rival competitor. When he next asked the study participants to list as many uses of an object (such as a brick or knife) as they could come up with, those who had written about their rivals persisted in the task and thought up significantly more uses for the object before moving on to another question than did the other participants. "It energizes people to think about a rival of theirs," Kilduff explained.

The results indicate that competing against a rival boosts people's performance on any tasks that require brute force or effort. There's a dark side, however: Kilduff also found that people who are "primed with rivalry" more often cheat or lie when given the opportunity. This effect manifests itself, for example, in soccer. "Games between rival teams have a significantly higher frequency of yellow and red cards given out for unethical behavior," Kilduff said.

In short, when you have a rival, "you're going to put forth more effort," he said, "but you're also going to cut corners and just do whatever it takes to win."

    Manslaughter charge in butt-enhancement death

    Miami Gardens Police via NBCMiami.com

Oneal Morris is shown in an undated police photo.

    By NBCMiami.com

MIAMI -- A South Florida resident previously charged with injecting people with Fix-a-Flat in a black market buttock-enhancing business was arrested Thursday on a charge of manslaughter, authorities said.

The Broward Sheriff's Office said Oneal Morris, 32, was arrested at her mother's house in Coconut Creek on one count of manslaughter. Morris, who is transgender,?identifies herself as?female, but was booked into jail as a man, the Miami New Times reported.

Shatarka Nuby, 32, died in March in Tallahassee from what an assistant medical examiner called "massive systemic silicone migration" as a result of the cosmetic silicone injections, authorities said.

See the original report at NBCMiami.com

"Shatarka Nuby would pay a transvestite she knew as Dutchess up to hundreds of dollars to come to her house and inject her buttocks, hips, thighs and breasts with an unknown substance. Then Dutchess, sometimes wearing medical scrubs and a stethoscope, would seal the injection sites with super glue and cotton balls," the Broward Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Morris has been arrested multiple times on allegations of performing cosmetic procedures with no license in both Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

The alleged victims have stories similar to Nuby's, who wrote a letter to the Department of Health shortly before she died. Nuby was the only victim whose complications were fatal, authorities said.

Nuby told friends and relatives that the injection sites became hard and hot and her skin turned black. Another alleged victim had to undergo surgery after an injection, authorities said.

Morris had previously turned herself in to authorities in March to face charges of medicine without a license and practicing medicine without a license resulting in serious injury. She was released the same day.

Eric Dane is leaving 'Grey's Anatomy'

    By Tierney Bricker, E! Online

    Karen Neal / ABC

Eric Dane as Mark Sloan on "Grey's Anatomy."

"Grey's Anatomy" will be down another doctor in season nine. Eric Dane, who plays fan favorite Mark Sloan aka McSteamy, is departing the ABC hit series, sources confirm to us. (No, we're not crying. We just have something in our eye!)

While Mark was near death at the end of the season eight finale, creator Shonda Rhimes hints that fans possibly haven't seen the last of the hot doc on Grey's Anatomy.

More from E! ABC unveils premiere dates for 'Grey's Anatomy,' 'Revenge,' 'Once Upon a Time' and more!

In a statement to TV Line, who first reported the news of his departure, Dane says, "I am extremely grateful to everyone at 'Grey's,' ABC and Shondaland for the experience and memories I have had over the course of this run. It has been wonderful to work alongside and learn from a creative force such as Shonda Rhimes."

Rhimes also issued a statement addressing Dane's departure. "We're a big family here at 'Grey's' with a long history together and Eric will always remain an important part of our family," she says. "I wish him the best and I look forward to watching him as he continues to steam up the big and small screen."

Rhimes calls Mark "one of the most beloved characters" on the show and says the actor "did not come to this decision lightly, but after much consideration and conversations, he and I have decided that this is the right time for his storyline to end."

In the season eight finale, Mark watched helplessly as his love Lexie (Chyler Leigh) died after suffering injuries from the shocking plane crash; Mark ended the finale near death and distraught over his loss.

More from E! See pics of 'Grey's Anatomy' OMG moments?

When we chatted with Rhimes after the finale, she hinted that everyone wouldn't survive the plane crash.

"They're still out there in the forest, and we don't know if they are going to be OK," she teased. "We left it open for a reason because...I hate to say this, but just because you saw people alive at the end of the finale doesn't mean they're going to be alive when the season starts up. We are completely jumping off into the unknown next season."

"Grey's Anatomy's" ninth season premieres Sept. 27 on ABC.

Pirates acquire LHP Rodriguez from the Astros

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? The surprising Pittsburgh Pirates are getting serious about their playoff push, acquiring pricey lefty Wandy Rodriguez in a trade Tuesday night with the Houston Astros.

Without even a winning record since their last trip to the postseason in 1992, the Pirates began the night just 1? games behind the Reds in the NL Central and in the thick of the wild-card race. They have been looking to bolster the back end of their solid rotation that is led by A.J. Burnett and James McDonald.

Rodriguez provides Pittsburgh with another arm.

The Pirates will get up to $17.7 million in the deal to offset what could amount to over $30 million in salary for Rodriguez. They are sending Triple-A All-Star Rudy Owen and Colton Cain, both left-handers, and outfielder Robbie Grossman to Houston.

"We talked since Day One of the trading season about wanting to improve our club either via pitching or via hitting," Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said. "The pitching market turned out to be more flexible than the hitting market and we decided this was the right move for us."

The only player on the Astros roster remaining from their 2005 trip to the World Series, Rodriguez has been a steady presence on a rebuilding ballclub that has the worst record in the majors this year and lost 106 games last season.

He made his way through Houston's dugout during the fifth inning of Tuesday night's game against the Cincinnati Reds, shaking hands and hugging his teammates. He looked somber and his eyes were red-rimmed as he said his goodbyes.

Signed by the Astros in 1999, he is 80-84 with a 4.04 ERA in eight seasons. Rodriguez is 7-9 with a 3.79 ERA this year.

Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle believes Rodriguez will be helped by a change of scenery.

"I'm sure a change of clubhouses for him, a change of the dynamic of being in a situation (a pennant race) he hasn't been in for three or four years should be helpful," Hurdle said. "I've prepared for him for many years as a manager and as a coach. He has also been a tough pitcher to hit, a tough pitcher to beat. I'm very happy that we're adding him to our rotation."

The Astros rewarded Rodriguez with a three-year, $34 million contract before the 2011 season. And Houston will pay $1.7 million of the approximately $3.4 million on left on Rodriguez's contract this year. The Astros are also scheduled to pay $8.5 million of his $13 million salary next season.

A $14 million team option for 2014 became a player option with the trade, and Houston would be responsible for $7.5 million should Rodriguez choose to exercise the option.

The 33-year-old Rodriguez's salary is a big addition for the team with the 26th lowest payroll in baseball at the start of 2012 at $63,432,000.

Owens is 8-5 with a 3.14 ERA in 19 starts for Triple-A Indianapolis. He has 85 strikeouts and only 25 walks in 117 1-3 innings. Owens, a 28th round selection in the 2006 draft, will be placed on the Astros 40-man roster.,

The 22-year-old Grossman was hitting .262 with 20 doubles, seven home runs and 35 RBIs in 94 games for Double-A Altoona. Baseball America ranked him as the Pirates eighth best prospect. He was a sixth-round pick in 2008 out of Cy-Fair High School in Houston.

Cain, 21, is 3-5 with a 4.20 ERA in 16 starts for Class-A Bradenton. An eighth-round pick in 2009, Cain is a graduate of Waxahachie High School in Texas.

Romney under fire for comments about London Olympics

(Charles Dharapak/AP)LONDON?For the second day in a row, Mitt Romney's visit to London was marred by controversy, as the British media seized on comments the GOP candidate made suggesting he found London's preparations for the 2012 Summer Olympics "disconcerting."

In an interview with NBC News on Wednesday, Romney, who has campaigned on his experience running the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, was asked if he thought London was "ready" for the games.

"You know, it's hard to know just how well it will turn out," Romney told NBC. "There are a few things that were disconcerting. The stories about the private security firm not having enough people, the supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials ? that obviously is not something which is encouraging."

Romney's comments were immediately big news in London, splashed across the websites of major newspapers. In a press conference Thursday just hours before he was set to meet with Romney, Prime Minister David Cameron issued a snippy rejection of Romney's comments.

"We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world. Of course it's easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere," Cameron said, a comment that was widely interpreted as a reference to Salt Lake City, where Romney headed up the organizing committee.

Cameron told reporters he looked forward to addressing the subject with Romney during their meeting at No. 10 Downing Street?and presumably he did.

Emerging after his sit-down with Cameron to speak to more than 100 reporters waiting outside the prime minister's office, Romney immediately heaped effusive praise on the London games. He spoke of how the games would energize "millions" of people in the city and how nice it was to look out the back windows of No. 10 Downing Street to see an Olympic venue?right in the "heart of London," he noted.

"What I see shows imagination and forethought and a lot of organization, and I expect the games to be highly successful," Romney said.

[Get more updates from Romney's overseas trip by following @hollybdc on Twitter]

Asked about his comments to NBC, Romney suggested they had not been meant as an insult and repeatedly praised London organizers. He said that no Olympics has ever been pulled off without mistakes?not even the Olympics he ran in Salt Lake City.

"My experience with Olympic organizing is that there's always a few very small things that end up going not quite right the first day or so," Romney said. But the issues always get "ironed out," he added.

The flap over Romney's Olympics comments comes just a day after his campaign went on the defense after the Daily Telegraph quoted an unnamed Romney adviser suggesting President Barack Obama did not fully appreciate the "Anglo-Saxon heritage" between the United States and Great Britain. The Romney campaign immediately insisted the comment didn't come from anyone affiliated with the campaign?a position later echoed by the candidate himself, who told NBC he believes Obama does understand the special relationship between the U.S. and Britain.

Both controversies threatened to overshadow a trip that Romney aides hoped would help the GOP candidate boost his credibility on foreign policy issues, an area where some believe his resume is lacking. The stir over Romney's Olympics comments could also undermine another goal of the trip: to call attention to Romney's successful stewardship of the Salt Lake City games.

Speaking to reporters outside No. 10 Downing Street, Romney did damage control, going on at length about the enthusiasm around the games and how well the games appeared to be organized.

"This is an indication of a community that will share in the Olympic experience, be unified and uplifted by it, and I am delighted," Romney said.

Higher-ed lags on 'sustainable' investing - Philanthropy North Carolina

Investment in environmental, social and corporate governance by college and university endowments, an investment strategy those institutions pioneered in the 1970s with anti-apartheid campaigns, is less widespread than it may seem, a new study says.

Higher-education endowents, which represent over $400 billion in combined assets under management, also show a ?general lack of transparency? in their practices in environmental, social and governance investing, or ESG, says the study, which was commissioned and funded by the Investor Responsibility Research Center Institute and conducted by Tellus Institute.

?Historically, endowments were groundbreaking institutional investors that addressed social? and environmental considerations in their investments far earlier than others,? Jon Kukomnik, executive director of the IRRC Institute, says in a statement. ?Our findings indicate that today?s endowments no longer are leaders in the institutional ESG investment arena.?

The study, ?Environmental, Social and Governance Investing by College and University Endowments in the United States,? is based on an analysis of ?sustainable? investing by education endowments, including the aggregation of?multiple survey data sets,? plus new primary research.

The main form of sustainable investing activity by higher-ed endowments tends to remain ?single-issue negative screening? of public-equity portfolios such as tobacco or targeted divestment from the Sudan, the study says.

And while a growing number of surveys and reporting mechanisms have emerged in the last 10 years to obtain inforation about sustainable and responsible endowment management, it says, a ?widespread lack of independent verification of self-reported data exists? and sustainable investment transparency ?remains poor.?

Investment policies by college and university endowments are ?remarkably opaque, even at some state-funded universities,? the study says.

The education community also is ?largely is absent from the national and global institutional investment networks,? it says.

Not a single higher-education endowment is among the 900? signatories of the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment, for example, and only one is a member of the Council of Institutional Investors, the leading U.S. association of institutional investors, the study says.

It also finds issues that relate to ?confusion about ESG semantics.?

Some colleges and universities ?claim to be making sustainable investments when those investments do not meet the standard definitions of such investments,? the study says.

Confusion about the semantics of sustainable investing has resulted in ?problematic claims and misclassification of investments,? the study says.

And despite considerable focus on proxy-voting recommendations, an effort that encourages endowments to be more active and engaged shareholders by using their proxy power, many colleges are shifting investments from publicly-traded securities to ?indirect investments in commingled vehicles and more opaque, illiquid investments in alternative asset classes,? the study says.

Traditional equity investing, including proxy voting, represents a decreasing portion of many endowments, it says.

?The endowment community exhibits a weak understanding of ESG investing strategies, trends, opportunities, and language,? the study says.

While sustainable investing is not widespread in the higher-ed endowment community, it says, some innovative investing programs could serve as models.

Those include Middlebury College and Dickinson College, which have invested in a Sustainability Investments Initiative that includes clean-tech investments, as well as the Omidyar Tufts Microfinance Fund at Tufts University.

And misperceptions about sustainable investing ?open immense learning opportunities for the endowment community,? the study says, ?though a much great openness to discussions of sustainable and responsible investing is needed.?

What You Need to Know to Travel the Alaska Highway

ROAD TRIP It pays to plan ahead if you're driving the Alaska Highway. When the road opened in 1942, even military trucks did not always survive it.

WHITEHORSE, Yukon Territory ? As a tourism destination, the Alaska (or Alcan) Highway does not have a lot to recommend it ? and that is the biggest thing in its favor. If you drive the 1,000 or so miles from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, to Delta Junction, near Fairbanks, Alaska, you will not see many motels, fast food joints, miniature golf courses, water parks or other hallmarks of North American road trips.

What you will see are snow-covered mountains, spruce forests, wildflowers, tundra and eagles, bears, caribou, moose and even the occasional bison grazing along the side of the road.

?The Alaska Highway is the legendary road of the north,? Syd Cannings, a zoologist at the Yukon Conservation Data Center, writes in a coming book on the ecosystems the road crosses ? among them the Rockies (and the Continental Divide), the Yukon River and the St. Elias Mountains (which include the highest peak in Canada).

At its northern end, it enters Beringia, one of the few northern realms untouched for millions of years by glaciers. This was the landscape the ancestors of today?s Native Americans encountered when they crossed the land bridge from Asia in the last ice age.

When the road opened in 1942, even military trucks did not always survive it. After World War II it was opened to civilian traffic, only to be closed almost at once when too many vehicles ended up broken down at the side. As recently as the 1980s much of the Canadian portion was paved with gravel, enough to leave many a car and truck a battered wreck.

Today, all of this can be enjoyed from the two-lane highway?s relative comfort and safety, but that is a relatively recent development.

?We still get people showing up with 15 jerrycans and 9 spare tires on the roof rack,? said Wally Hidinger, Yukon?s director of transportation engineering. ?You just don?t need it. You can drive with no trouble at all, summer and winter.?

Still, given the highway?s relative lack of plush amenities, it pays to plan ahead.

For that, you need The Milepost, an annual guide that lists campgrounds, gas stations, restaurants and so on, mile by mile. (Note that because engineers have been straightening the road?s curves since it was opened, milepost designations don?t always match actual mileage.)

The Guide to the Alaska Highway, by Ron Dalby, offers tips on what to pack for the trip, how to find fishing holes and where to camp. Among other things, it advises that recreational vehicles? water, propane and sewer pipes should be ?tucked out of the way of flying gravel.?

More good advice: Gas up every day at lunchtime (gas stations along the Alcan often open late or close early), drive with your headlights on, pay attention to the weather, and turn off radar detectors, which are illegal here.

If you make this trip, you will probably want to spend some time here in Whitehorse, Yukon?s territorial capital and by far the largest community along the road. The city is home to the S.S. Klondike National Historic Site; the Klondike is one of the few survivors of the scores of paddle-wheel steamboats that once plied the Yukon River.

The Yukon Transportation Museum offers exhibits not just about the highway, but also relics of Yukon travel by everything from dogsled to ambulance. The Yukon Beringia Interpretive Center has exhibits on people and animals of land-bridge days ? including the cast of a skeleton of the largest woolly mammoth ever recovered in North America and a diorama of a cave settlement of people who might have hunted it.

The premier hostelry in Whitehorse is the Westmark, one of a chain of hotels serving Alaska and the Yukon. It?s not fancy, but its rooms are comfortable and its restaurant offers stick-to-the ribs fare. Nearby are other restaurants, including a Tim Hortons (purveyors of the doughnuts that are practically the national food of Canada). Also try the Burnt Toast Cafe, and ask for the bison sausage; and the Yukon Mining Company, where the sp?cialit? de la maison is bison burger.

Brittany Wenger, 17, Wins Google Science Fair Grand Prize For Breast

Have you ever helped the hard-of-hearing listen to music? Or built a computer program to diagnose breast cancer? These kids have.

The five teenage winners of the second annual Google Science Fair were announced on Monday, according to Scientific American. Each of these brainy teens were chosen from among 30 finalists from around the world and were treated (along with the runners-up) to a gala held in an airplane hanger near the company's Palo Alto headquarters in California. (This is Google, after all.)

But the winners, of course, were awarded the best swag: Prizes included a college scholarships from Google for $25,000 or $50,000, trips to scientific hotspots like CERN and Fermilab, and (perhaps best of all), trophies made out of Lego bricks.

What did these brainiacs do to win the admiration of one of the best tech companies in the world? Read about each of they're projects below.

    BRITTANY WENGER FROM FLORIDA:

    gsf83

The Grand Prize winner of the science fair, for good reason, was a 17-year-old from Lakewood Ranch, Florida. Combining the fields of biology and computer science, Wenger wrote an app that helps doctors diagnose breast cancer, according to the description of her project on Google.

The type of computer program, called a "neural network," was designed by Wenger to mimic the human brain: Give it a massive amount of information (in this case, 7.6 million trials), and the artificial "brain" will learn to detect complex patterns and make diagnostic calls on breast cancer. Her program used data from "fine needle aspirates," a minimally invasive procedure that, unfortunately, is often one of the least precise diagnosis processes, according to Fox News. But Wenger is helping change that, as her program correctly identifies 99 percent of malignant tumors.

?I think it might be hospital ready," she told WWSB. "I'd love to get different data from doctors. Right now, I have 700 test samples.?

Visit her app at Cloud4Cancer Breast Cancer Detection (here) to see how it works.

    JONAH KOHN FROM CALIFORNIA:

    gsf63

For this eight grader from San Diegan, who won the 13- to 14-year-old category, it all started with a bite on his guitar. "Last year, when I wanted to play guitar with one of my friends, I realized it was much too loud in the classroom to hear the guitar," Kohn said in a YouTube video. "But if you put your teeth on the top of the guitar, then you can hear it no matter how loud it is around you."

Kohn saw implications for the hearing-impaired. For his science-fair project, he wanted to show that the experience of music could be improved for the hard-of-hearing through tactile sound.

Filtering songs down to different frequency ranges and applying those vibrations to different parts of the body (such as fingertips), Kohn showed that the listening experience of people with cochlear implants could be improved by 95 percent, based on tests of 12 individuals with hearing loss.

"I thought it was a very inspiring idea," Kohn told KPBS. "I thought it could help a massive amount of people."

IVAN HERVIAS RODRIGUEZ, MARCOS OCHOA, SERGIO PASCUAL FROM SPAIN:

    gsf45

For the winning project in the 15- to 16-year-old category, this trio of young scientists form Logro?o, Spain documented the microbes and other nasty things living in the fresh water on northeaster Spain.

Collecting hundreds of samples over more than three years, according to their project description, they documented the presence of microbes found in over 60 fresh water sites, establishing fresh water quality for the entire valley of the Ebro River, mapped out below. (Watch them describe their project in Spanish in a YouTube video here.)

"They went back to a very ancient tradition in natural sciences, which is sampling the real world, cataloguing what you find, and then analyzing it to try to interpret what the implications are,? Vint Cerf, Google's chief Internet evangelist, told Scientific American of their project.
