London 2012 Olympics: Locog bows to public pressure and opens eventing inspections to spectators

Spectator gates at Greenwich Park will now open earlier, at 7.45am, and the horse inspection will begin at the later time of 8.15am.

Spectator access is in the International Equestrian Federation?s (FEI) rules for Olympic Games in the interests of transparency.

Maine Republicans are assailing President Barack Obama?s health care law by saying it amounts to a tax increase. Not only are they wrong, but it appears their memories are a little selective. Their own health insurance overhaul last year, which they will continue to champion on their campaign trails, included a tax.

If Republicans are going to argue against the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, they should first make sure they?re not also delegitimizing their own law.

The Republican argument stems from the fact that five justices agreed on Thursday that the penalty people must pay if they refuse to purchase health insurance is a kind of tax. Because Congress has taxing power, the requirement that virtually all Americans buy insurance is constitutional.

But even though the swing vote came from a conservative ? Justice John Roberts Jr. ? and even though Maine Republicans last year passed a health insurance reform bill, LD 1333, that included a provision to add a $4 charge to the monthly premium of Mainers with private coverage, some in the GOP argue the health care act is wrong because its legality is based on tax law.

?This massive tax hike will only destroy the American economy as it forces us over the financial cliff,? reads a press release from Gov. Paul LePage?s office issued after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Obama?s health care law is constitutional.

Maine Senate President Kevin Raye, who is running for the U.S. House, called it ?an unprecedented coercive new tax.? Olympia Snowe, Maine?s retiring Republican senator, said it will ?impose an onerous tax.?

The law, however, is not projected to equate to a tax increase for the vast majority of Mainers or Americans. Most people already have insurance through their employers, Medicaid or Medicare. An Urban Institute study found that of the 26.3 million people currently uninsured, about 70 percent of them qualify for tax credits to help them pay for a qualified plan.

Just 7.3 million people, or 2 percent of the population, will not be offered financial assistance under the health care law and will be subject to penalties if they do not obtain coverage. The idea that the health care law amounts to a tax hike for many Americans is simply wrong.

In fact, studies show that the law will lower costs for Americans. The nonprofit Families USA estimates that by 2019 more than 500,000 Maine families will be better off by an average $1,685 per year because of the law.

The misinformation-spreading by Republicans comes on the heels of them actually implementing a health insurance tax. Just a year ago, their health reform law aimed to lower costs for young, healthy Mainers by putting higher-cost policyholders in a special pool and then defraying the costs of their insurance by having a monthly tax of $4 assessed on all other policyholders.

The $4 tax was designed to replace a charge on health insurance claims that Mainers paid to keep the Dirigo Health program in operation. People legitimized it by saying it would be less than the annual Dirigo assessment. But it is still a tax.

No one likes the word ?tax,? but Mainers should remember that our state?s transportation infrastructure, schools, police forces and much of our health care system all are possible because of tax dollars. Republicans should gather their facts before they claim the health care law means a tax increase. And if a health insurance tax is bad now, they should explain why it wasn?t bad in 2011.

Chimp attack victim identified as Texas student

JOHANNESBURG An American researcher mauled by chimpanzees in South Africa has been identified as a graduate student in Texas studying anthropology.

Andrew Oberle was in critical condition Friday after undergoing surgery near Johannesburg. Officials say the 26-year-old was giving a lecture Thursday at the Jane Goodall Institute Chimpanzee Eden when two chimpanzees grabbed his feet and pulled him under a fence.

Oberle is a student at the University of Texas at San Antonio. The school said in a statement Friday that "our hearts go out to Andrew and his family."

Officials in South Africa say Oberle had "multiple and severe bite wounds" and was dragged nearly a half-mile by the chimpanzees.

Tomlinson to call it quits after 11 NFL seasons

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? LaDainian Tomlinson's brilliant NFL career will officially end when he ceremoniously rejoins the San Diego Chargers for a day.

The Chargers said Sunday that Tomlinson, who was the NFL MVP in 2006 with San Diego and is the fifth-leading rusher in league history, will re-sign with the team on Monday and then announce his retirement.

Tomlinson was drafted in the first round by San Diego in 2001 and became one of the biggest stars in team history, helping revive the Chargers after the devastating Ryan Leaf years and turning them into a force in the AFC West. He spent the first nine years of his career in San Diego. He played the last two seasons with the New York Jets.

Tomlinson won the MVP in '06, when he set NFL single-season records with 31 touchdowns, including 28 rushing, and 186 points. He ran for a career-high 1,815 yards that year, giving him the first of two straight league rushing titles.

Tomlinson finishes his career with 13,684 yards and 145 touchdowns.

Tomlinson spoke at the public memorial service for Junior Seau on May 11, drawing the biggest cheers of the night.

Perhaps his most memorable moment with the Chargers came on Dec. 10, 2006, when he swept into the end zone late in a game against the Denver Broncos for his third touchdown of the afternoon to break Shaun Alexander's year-old record of 28 touchdowns.

His linemen hoisted him onto their shoulders and carried him toward the sideline, with Tomlinson holding the ball high in his right hand and waving his left index finger, while the fans chanted "L.T.! L.T.!" and "MVP! MVP!"

When the Chargers released him in February 2010, quarterback Philip Rivers said: "I had the best view in the house on some of those awesome runs he made."

Tomlinson had said recently that he might continue his career if the right opportunity was available. Some fans hoped the Chargers would bring back Tomlinson as a third-down back, but that appeared impossible as long as general manager A.J. Smith was in control.

Tomlinson had a less-than-smooth separation from the Chargers. The slashing, dazzling runs came less frequently and Tomlinson was slowing down because of injuries and age. He became less and less the face of the franchise as his role was reduced in a pass-happy offense. The Chargers would have been on the hook for a $2 million roster bonus, along with a $5 million salary.

Days after his release from the Chargers, Tomlinson held a tearful news conference at the suburban country club where he and his wife lived.

L.T. also had a public tiff with Smith.

A year before the Chargers released Tomlinson, Smith came under fire for mocking a statement Tomlinson made about wanting to stay in San Diego.

Tomlinson's squeaky-clean image took a hit during the AFC championship game loss at New England in January 2008. Forced out early with a sprained knee, Tomlinson watched glumly from the sideline, huddled in a parka and his face hidden behind the tinted visor on his helmet.

The Chargers were less than truthful in giving an overly optimistic prognosis about his injury during the game, announcing that he had a "sore knee and can return." That caused fans and commentators to question his toughness.

Tomlinson said afterward that it was obvious he couldn't play. Coach Norv Turner got miffed when a reporter asked what Rivers and Antonio Gates should think when they played hurt but Tomlinson didn't.

"That's the stupidest thing you could ask," Turner said. "The guy was not able to go. The doctors and trainers said he couldn't go."

Burned by that experience, Tomlinson ? always the most brutally honest employee in the Chargers' organization ? was forthright with the media when he sustained a serious groin injury in the 2008 regular-season finale. Tomlinson's honesty caused Smith to bristle.

That groin injury sidelined Tomlinson in a divisional-round playoff loss to Pittsburgh, the first time he missed a game due to injury in his pro career. He had been slowed earlier that season by a toe injury.

He sprained his right ankle in the 2009 season opener against Oakland and missed the next two games.

He ran for 914 yards in 2010 with the Jets, but carried only 75 times for 280 yards last season, playing mostly on passing downs.

Unexpected discovery highlights new role for cell death regulator

An unexpected discovery of how the body controls cell death has revealed a potential new therapeutic target.

A research team based at Cardiff University's School of Biosciences has already revealed the mechanism by which high alcohol intake can induce pancreatitis and its progression to pancreatic cancer. Now a new study, published in Current Biology, reveals a hitherto unknown interaction between two well known molecules, which has important implications for our understanding of inflammation and cancer in the pancreas as well as other organs.

The Cardiff team studied the protein Bcl-2, already known to be capable of inhibiting programmed cell death in all tissue types in the body. Cell death is vital to normal development, and under certain circumstances this protein can therefore promote tumour growth and cancer.

The Cardiff study of pancreas cells showed that removal of the Bcl-2 protein activated a molecule in the cell membrane which pumps calcium out of the cells. As the team expected, a lower level of Bcl-2 increased the level of programmed cell death. But they also found that the lack of Bcl-2 markedly protected against another much more dangerous form of cell death - necrosis, in which cells swell and burst, releasing their contents and causing severe inflammation. The team found the increased protection against necrosis was directly linked to increased activity of the calcium pump.

The team, led by Dr. Oleg Gerasimenko and MRC Professor Ole Petersen, believes that blocking the Bcl-2 effect on the calcium pump, so that the pump becomes more active, could be a beneficial therapy against necrosis and the subsequent dangerous inflammation. This is important because necrosis of the enzyme-secreting pancreatic cells, often the result of high alcohol consumption, markedly increases the risk of pancreatic cancer, the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in both Europe and the US with a 5-year survival rate of only 4 per cent.

Professor Petersen, also Director of Cardiff's School of Biosciences, said: "The new findings come from studies of pancreatic cells. We have discovered an entirely unexpected link between two well known molecules and this link is a potentially attractive target for treatment of pancreatitis and the dangerous progression of pancreatitis to pancreatic cancer. However, our findings are also likely to be of more general importance. The inhibitor of programmed cell death, Bcl-2, and the calcium pump in the cell membrane are found in every type of cell in our body. The interaction between the two could well be important in deciding cell fates in many different organs and also the development of inflammation and different cancer types."

UMaine sports teams compile 3.04 GPA, fifth in America East

ANNAPOLIS, Md. ? The University of Maine was one of seven America East schools to post a 3.00 cumulative grade point average for the 2011-2012 year, it was announced during the league?s annual meeting Wednesday night.

The Black Bears finished the year with a 3.04 grade point average.

The Hartford Hawks won the 2011-2012 America East Academic Cup with a GPA of 3.16. Vermont was second with a 3.15, while New Hampshire recorded a 3.14, followed by Binghamton (3.11), Maine, Boston University (3.03), University of Maryland Baltimore County (3.00), Stony Brook (2.98) and Albany (2.93).

The Academic Cup, established in 1995, is presented to the institution whose student-athletes post the highest GPAs during the academic year. In all, 72 percent of the league?s teams (108-of-149), 10 more than 2010-2011, had GPAs of 3.0 or better.

The league?s 3,400-plus student-athletes compiled a 3.06 average during the 2011-2012 season, just one one-hundredth off last year?s record high.

?The America East Conference and its institutions continue to consistently perform at a high level in the classroom, which is a real strength across this league,? said Commissioner Amy Huchthausen.

The University of Maine men?s cross country team and the Black Bear women?s soccer team led each of their respective sports in overall team GPA. The men?s cross country team finished with a 3.29, while the women?s soccer team posted a 3.42.

The Black Bears have twice won the America East Academic Cup. Maine won the 2004 Academic Cup and were named co-champions in 2007.

UM?s McFetters to compete in national meet

University of Maine women?s track and field standout Robyn McFetters of Barrington, R.I., will compete in the prestigious USA National Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday in Bloomington, Ind.

McFetters, who just completed her freshman season at Maine, will be competing in the hammer throw, an event that she won at the America East Championships in May. She also holds the school record. She competed at the NCAA East Preliminary Round last month.

Should McFetters place among the top three and have a World Championship qualifying throw, she will compete for the USA Junior Team at the World Junior Championships in Barcelona July 10-15.

NCAA honors two UMaine teams

The University of Maine men?s and women?s cross country teams were two of 954 NCAA Division I sports teams honored by the NCAA on Thursday for earning Public Recognition Awards, based on their most recent multiyear Academic Progress Rate.

These awards are given each year to teams with APRs in the top 10 percent in each sport.

The men?s cross country team was honored for the second straight year, while the women?s squad has received honors seven years in a row.

The 954 teams publicly recognized this year for high achievement represent 560 women?s teams and 394 men?s or mixed squads.

Seven America East schools were honored for their APR scores, with 25 different teams honored. There were five America East men?s cross country teams honored, while UMBC joined the Black Bears as the lone other America East women?s cross country team to receive recognition.

UPDATE 1-India seeks more oil from OPEC members except Iran

NEW DELHI, June 14 (Reuters) - India is seeking extra oil supplies from OPEC members Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Algeria, as the country, already cutting its dependence on sanctions-hit Iran, works to secure additional barrels to feed its expanding refining capacity.

India has sought an additional 100,000 barrels per day (bpd) of oil - equivalent to 5 million tonnes a year - from its biggest supplier, Saudi Arabia, on top of 640,000 bpd which it got in 2011/12, a government statement said, citing a meeting in Vienna on Thursday between oil ministers of the two countries.

India, exempted on Monday from the latest U.S. sanctions aimed against Iran's disputed nuclear programme after cutting crude purchases from Tehran, is the world's fourth-largest oil importer and the second-biggest customer of the Islamic republic.

In 2012/13 India's annual oil imports from Iran could fall even further than a planned 11 percent cut as it is struggling to secure Iran shipments, hit by insurance problems triggered by European sanctions that take effect in July.

At a meeting with his Saudi counterpart Ali al-Naimi, India's oil minister S. Jaipal Reddy also invited investment from the world's top oil exporter in its petrochemical and downstream sector.

During a meeting with Iranian oil minister Rostam Qasemi, Reddy sought more time to settle terms of a service contract for part of the giant South Pars gas field between state-run ONGC Videsh Ltd and Iran Offshore Oil Company, the statement said.

Ministers were gathered in Vienna for a meeting of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

Development of Iran's energy sector has been slowed by the sanctions and many foreign companies have been forced to pull out. Energy-hungry India is keen to keep discussions running.

Reddy also sought extra oil supplies from Algeria, which has recently started supplying state-run Indian Oil Corp and may soon supply Hindustan Petroleum Corp.

India, which faces declining local gas output, also wants liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies from Algeria on a long-term basis and Reddy added said it wanted to invest in the sector in Algeria.

State-run GAIL (India) Ltd is in talks with Algeria's national oil company Sonatrach for LNG imports on annual basis, the statement said.

Reddy also discussed pricing of a 3.5 million tonnes a year LNG deal between Petronet LNG and RasGas with Qatar's oil minister Mohammed al-Sada, hoping for an early solution.

Qatar, the world's top LNG exporter, annually supplies 7.5 million tonnes of LNG to Petronet under a long term deal.

Avtar Singh, Former Indian Soldier Kills Family, Self

SELMA, Calif. -- A former Indian army officer wanted in the killing of a human rights lawyer in the disputed Kashmir region shot and killed his own wife and two of their children in their California home before apparently committing suicide, authorities said.

A 17-year-old believed to be the man's son also was "barely alive" after the attack Saturday morning, Fresno County Sheriff's Deputy Chris Curtice said.

The ex-officer, Avtar Singh, had been arrested in this central California city last year after his wife said he choked her, and the Indian government sought his extradition days after that in the 1996 death of Jalil Andrabi.

But he remained free, for reasons that were not immediately clear. Andrabi's brother and lawyer blamed New Delhi, saying Singh's family would still be alive if the government had tried harder to bring him to justice.

"These lives could have been saved if a trial of Maj. Avtar Singh was conducted on time," said Andrabi's brother, Arshad. "We have lost that chance now. He was a known murderer and we are appalled that he was even shielded in the United States. It's a failure of justice at all levels."

Singh, who owned a trucking company in Selma, called police around 6:15 a.m. Saturday and told them that he had just killed four people, Curtice said. He added that a sheriff's SWAT team was called in to assist because of Singh's military background and the India charges against him.

When the SWAT team entered the home they found the bodies of Singh, a woman believed to be his wife and two children, ages 3 and 15, Curtice said. All appeared to have died from gunshot wounds.

The 17-year-old suffered severe head trauma and underwent surgery at a hospital where he remained in intensive care Saturday evening, Curtice said.

Singh, 47, was arrested by Selma police in February 2011 when his wife reported that he had choked her, Selma Police Chief Myron Dyck said shortly after that arrest. Police then discovered that he was being sought in India, but Dyck said at the time that he could not keep Singh in custody on the murder charge without a warrant from international authorities.

Several days later, India requested that the United States arrest and extradite Singh. It wasn't clear on Saturday why Singh had remained free since the request. A request for comment from the Consulate General of India in San Francisco on Saturday was not immediately returned.

Dyck didn't immediately return a call seeking comment Saturday about the 2011 arrest, and Selma police referred questions about the apparent murder-suicide to Fresno County sheriff's officials.

Jalil Andrabi was killed at the height of protests in Indian-controlled Kashmir, where nearly a dozen rebel groups have fought security forces for independence or merger with Pakistan since 1989. More than 68,000 people, mostly civilian, have been killed in the uprising and subsequent Indian crackdown.

Andrabi disappeared in March 1996 in Kashmir's main city, Srinagar. His body was recovered 19 days later in a local river. He had been shot in the head and his eyes were gouged out.

A police investigation said Andrabi had been picked up from his home by Indian troops and killed in their custody. The probe blamed Singh and his soldiers for that killing and also accused Singh of involvement in the killings of six other Kashmiri men.

Singh had been charged in Kashmir only with Andrabi's killing. Kashmir police had sought permission from the government of India for Singh's prosecution in the six other killings. Under India's armed forces special powers act, federal permission has to be obtained before police can prosecute any army or paramilitary soldier posted in Kashmir.

No soldier has been punished for Andrabi's killing, human rights lawyers say.

Singh fled India after he was accused of killing Andrabi. Hafizullah Mir, a human rights lawyer, said he was tracked to California in 2009 with the help of the Canadian Center for International Justice, a human rights advocacy group, but that New Delhi did not pursue extradition until after his 2011 arrest.

In Selma, Singh owned and operated Jay Truck Lines. Alli Adan, a driver for the company, said he had seen Singh the night before the killings, and that had appeared to be acting normally.

"He was a nice guy," Adan told the Fresno Bee. "I couldn't believe it because I didn't think he could do something like this."

I don't mean to sound trite, but they should just rename this film "Drug Trip: The Movie" and be done with it. Seriously.Ok then, with that out of the way, I must say, this is a bit of a hard film to really rate or review. Obviously I'm gonna have to do just that, but it is a bit difficult for me.This fantasy centered around The Beatles going out to stop a bunch of creatures caleld Blue Meanies who have taken over a place called Pepperland combines the terrific music of The Beatles with really cool and unique art disrection and visual styles to create a film that is really just an otherworldlt experience. Just so you know, I didn't see this high, but I did have a couple of drinks. I really cn't say what would be the best way to experience this film. I leave that up to you.There's a story, but it's pretty much just a thin clothesline to hang some great tunes and trippy visuals on. This will probably not appeal to some people, but, I at least got something out of it, even if I don't truly know how I feel about this film-hence why my rating is mainly a formaility.I do think this should be seen though, because it is entertaining, and there's some wild stuff going on, even if it does get a bit too self indulgant with the psychedelia. At least there's the music and some subtle, dry humor to make the film more than just trippiness.

Baseball Expert Tony DeMarco has been covering the big leagues since 1987, and been casting Hall of Fame ballots for the last 14 years. He answers questions weekly here:

Q: I'm a dedicated Rays fan who is extremely frustrated with Carlos Pena's inability to hit anything other than a fastball. What are your thoughts on the Rays' less-than-productive bats? Do you think signing Hideki Matsui was a good move? If it were your call, do you have any other solutions?

A: No doubt, it can get frustrating watching the Rays struggle to score day after day. Through Wednesday, they stood 13th in the AL in batting average (ahead of only the Oakland A's), 10th in runs, eighth in on-base percentage and 10th in slugging percentage.

Broken down by position, Rays catchers, first basemen and second basemen all were hitting below .200, while DHs were at .214.

Broken down by spots in the lineup, the 3-4-5-6 hitters were at .224, .223, .229 and .230 through Wednesday, while No. 9 hitters were under .200.

And the team was batting .225 with runners in scoring position. Makes you wonder how they had a 31-25 record, doesn't it?

Along those lines, the good news is that the Rays finished ninth in the AL in runs scored in their pennant-winning 2008 season, and eighth in the AL in runs last season, when they won the wild card on the final night.

So hang in there, Jason ? and keep in mind that Desmond Jennings just returned to the lineup after a stay on the disabled list, and Evan Longoria is about to start a rehab assignment, so he could be back within two weeks.

Steve Nesius / Reuters Some good news for the Rays: star third baseman Evan Longoria could return from a hamstring injury within a couple weeks.

In the interim, Joe Maddon's lineup/matchup wizardry really has been stretched, as we've seen everything from Pena leading off to a revolving cleanup spot that has included no fewer than 10 different players, including Matsui, B.J. Upton, Jeff Keppinger, Drew Sutton and Elliott Johnson.

Matsui falls into that category of "why-not?" players the Rays give opportunities to due to their strict financial limitations. If he can't produce enough ? and early indications are that he won't ? at least it won't be too costly.

Leslie Anderson is a 30-year-old Cuban first baseman who leads the Rays' Triple-A Durham team in average, homers and RBI. He could be a possibility, and there always is the option of trading Wade Davis and/or a prospect for a young-but-established big-league regular, or a role player whose salary is in line with Davis' $1.5 million.

Q: A number of teams sported multiple picks in the early rounds of the recent amateur draft. Does that really mean anything? Aside from the first few picks of the first round, is there any assurance these kids will develop into solid major-leaguers, let alone stars?
? Mel Landis, National City, Calif.

A: The simple answer is no, there is no assurance of anything, Mel. Even No. 1-overall picks aren't locks to reach the majors and have productive careers.

As proof, I give you the names of Steve Chilcott (1966), Danny Goodwin (1971 and 1975), Al Chambers (1979), Shawn Abner (1984), Brien Taylor (1991), Bryan Bullington (2002) and Matt Bush (2004).

More negative draft numbers: A recent study of the 1981-2006 drafts showed that only about one-third of all first-round picks, and only about 20 percent of all top-10 overall picks, ever reached the major leagues ? and that's even for a cup of coffee.

So you can see just how tough it is for draft picks ? and I believe it's getting harder as the game expands globally, and undrafted free agents are being signed in countries all over the world.

And mostly, it's just the nature of the business ? when in many cases, you're picking a 17-18-year-old high-school kid, and projecting what kind of player he'll be in five-six years ? assuming he stays healthy and has no off-field issues.

But that doesn't mean organizations can't be built, and winning major-league teams can't be developed, through the draft. And the more picks you have near the top, the better your chances. (And incidentally, there is no trading of draft picks, but teams do receive additional picks in the first round and so-called sandwich round ? which occurs after the first round ? for free agents who signed with other teams.)

The Tampa Bay Rays are the best current example of building primarily through the draft, with David Price, Evan Longoria, Delmon Young, Jeff Niemann, B.J. Upton, Rocco Baldelli and Josh Hamilton among their No. 1 draft choices since 1999.

Other notable picks who came through their organization include Carl Crawford, James Shields, Jeremy Hellickson, Wade Davis, Desmond Jennings, Ben Zobrist, Reid Brignac and Jake McGee.

The Phillies also had a nice run of consecutive first-round picks from 1998-2002 ? Pat Burrell, Brett Myers, Chase Utley, Gavin Floyd, Cole Hamels ? as well as Ryan Howard (5th round, 2001) and Jimmy Rollins (2nd round, 1996) that helped fuel their recent success.

Q: What do you think of these White Sox?
? Jimmy, Chicago

A: When it comes to first-place teams at this point in the season, the White Sox are almost as surprising to me as the Baltimore Orioles. I didn't see either team finishing .500, let alone contending.

It's not easy to spot the reasons why, though: Paul Konerko's MVP-type first two months, the comeback seasons of Jake Peavy, Adam Dunn and Alex Rios, the breakouts of Chris Sale and Dayan Viciedo, and Addison Reed stabilizing the closer role.

The Tigers' struggles could keep the White Sox hanging around for quite awhile, but here are some potential trouble spots for impressive rookie manager Robin Ventura:

The Sox's 17-9 pace on the road won't continue ? although it must be said they are only 14-16 at home, which most likely will improve. The back three in the rotation all have 5-plus ERAs, although fill-in Jose Quintana has shown promise. The bullpen is full of power arms, but is short on experience.

However, it bodes well that through Wednesday, the Sox had a +32 run differential, while the rest of the AL Central was in the red: Cleveland (-19), Detroit (-19), Kansas City (-25) and Minnesota (-70).

And the right roster addition or two from general manager Kenny Williams ? who has shown he's not afraid to make a deal ? also could make a big difference.
